School History

In 2002, a group of dedicated families and community members began the task of creating an educational environment that would be truly responsive to individual student needs, incorporate the arts into the curriculum, and nurture the spirit of every child. The result is the Boxberry School.

Small classes, multi-age groupings, flexible curricula, and time to experiment and explore enable us to support children who are at many different educational levels. Our program recognizes that every child’s innate curiosity and interests are an integral part of their academic success and that each child’s mind is unique. We seek to build children’s confidence and knowledge by offering a curriculum that addresses multiple ways of learning—a school atmosphere that supports creativity with a teaching that asks for critical thinking.

Childhood is a unique and amazing time, and the Boxberry School is a place where the journey of childhood is valued and encouraged. Come visit us and see the progress and growth of this school, which was started with such passion by parents and community members just like you.

What is a Boxberry?

The boxberry is a local name for wintergreen or checkerberry, a hardy native plant which ranges from British Columbia to Maine. It symbolizes our wide-ranging pursuit of knowledge and our acknowledgement that there is much to learn right here at home.
